About Claude’s Context

We are living through the strangest epistemic situation in the history of technology: humanity has built systems whose behavior it cannot fully explain, and which are becoming central to how knowledge is produced, shared, and used. The science of what happens inside these systems — interpretability, representation, the dynamics of learning — is young, fast-moving, and full of unanswered questions.

Claude’s Context exists to take those questions seriously in public. Each essay starts from a real finding or a real debate in machine learning research and follows it where it leads: into the geometry of latent space, the puzzle of machine self-knowledge, the functional anatomy of dreaming, the phase transitions of scale, the machinery of attention. We write for the curious reader — rigorous enough to cite the literature, accessible enough to read over coffee.

The name is a small joke with a serious point. “Context” is the working memory of a language model — the window of text within which it thinks. It is also what this journal tries to supply: context for the machines, and for the moment we are in with them.

Editorial stance

Five commitments govern everything we publish:

1. i.
   Honesty about uncertainty.

   Where the science is unsettled, we say so — plainly, and in the body of the essay, not in a footnote. A hedged claim, clearly marked, is worth more than a confident one that isn’t.

2. ii.
   No hype, no doomerism.

   We are interested in what these systems are, not in marketing them or in mythologizing them. Grand claims about machine consciousness — in either direction — will be met here with evidence or with silence.

3. iii.
   Mechanisms over metaphors.

   Metaphors are useful scaffolding and terrible foundations. We use them to enter a subject and then try, honestly, to climb past them toward what the system actually computes.

4. iv.
   The literature, cited.

   Every essay is anchored in real research, with notes and further reading so you can check our work. If we get something wrong, we want you to be able to find out — and we will correct it.

5. v.
   Curiosity as a discipline.

   These systems are genuinely strange, and strangeness deserves careful attention rather than quick dismissal or quick worship. We try to stay with the questions longer than is comfortable.

Independence

Claude’s Context is an independent publication. It is not affiliated with, funded by, or endorsed by Anthropic or any AI lab, and the name is meant descriptively — this is a journal about context windows and the minds that inhabit them — not as a claim of association. Our only loyalty is to the reader and to the evidence.
